One of the first questions from dentists who are new to biopolymer crowns is how to choose the size properly.
Do not pick the size by eye alone. The choice has to take the anatomy of the tooth and the clinical situation into account.
1. Where do you start?
Measure the mesiodistal width of the tooth and compare it with the sizes in the library you are using.
2. Where are the sizes listed?
Sizes and the matching crown dimensions are in the library chart.
Match the measurement of the tooth to a crown size.
If you are between two sizes, try both in the mouth.
3. How do you know the crown fits?
At try-in, check several things at once:
• the crown should sit in the right position on the tooth;
• it should not seat under obvious tension;
• the margins should sit predictably against the gingival margin;
• check the contact with the neighboring teeth;
• check the occlusion after placement.
And the main point: do not try to rescue the wrong size by grinding the crown heavily.
When the size is right, try-in and adaptation become much more predictable.
